Apex Legends' Niche Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible This Season

The game developers have a special treat prepared for Apex Legends players, perfectly timed for the holidays. Fans of this game's super-slick movement can rejoice to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when Season 27: Amped launches on Nov. 4.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this feature gives players a surge of propulsion when scaling obstacles. As explained lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, this technique was previously existed of Apex Legends for quite a while, often called as "ledge boosting." But it's no easy feat for the average player, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or tournaments. In this update, the team is making it easier for players of all skill levels to successfully perform these tricky movement boosts.

"Mantle Boosts have been in the game for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and a player would never know it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," the designer states. "Now including a visual cue so players can easily see the timing to activate the fast-paced traversal skill, opening up the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a once niche technique available to all players? Lead Legend designer the development lead explains developers aims for players to feel powerful — even those who are inexperienced.

"[The playerbase] is doing other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we looked around at our competition, looked at what our players are doing, and we wondered, 'How can we provide these capabilities to a broader audience?'" Mohan explains. "Since currently, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — you need to change controls and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'How about we make a more official implementation?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is largely the name of the game in this season, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant receiving enhancements to maintain them mobile. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will boost players upward faster than before. Rampart's Amped Cover now include a roof and capability to grant speed boosts to those nearby. However it's aerial this Legend receiving significant improvements this season, with various adjustments implemented to make her stronger, faster, and more lethal.

"In my opinion many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," says Legend designer the designer. "Certainly she was dominant in the past, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. This presented an ideal chance for the team to revisit a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and essentially restore her to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To reclaim her competitive status in the game's meta, Holstead notes the team assessed all her skills and implemented some powerful modifications. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, increasing her speed during flight, and the jets themselves regenerates much quicker, allowing her to spend more time aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive skill — which lifts teammates into the air for repositioning or escape — requires much less time to activate. She's also getting some new perk choices that players can choose to conserve resources, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," Holstead says.

Map Changes

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, receives a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and makes claiming the high ground more manageable. Respawn says the game Season 27 is all about providing gamers the tools they need to keep up with matches.

"Really, we were looking at the game's fundamental nature as a movement shooter," says principal designer the lead.

Apex Legends the Amped season releases November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
