Chelsea Manager Maresca Dismisses Man City Links as '100%' Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing speculation about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, is under contract running through the end of the decade, with a possible extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions Following Previous Remarks
Maresca's most recent comments follow after he described a recent 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had sparked considerable talk of a potential disagreement between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about different things. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian did confirm he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, potentially available for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the situation publicly, there has equally been no resolution forthcoming, leaving the disagreement unaddressed.
The atmosphere during these media briefings has become increasingly awkward, leading to fears it could impact what has otherwise been a promising start to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting position is positive: they are fourth in the league, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better Champions League draw with good results in their remaining matches.
The lingering question is whether this off-field situation might begin to disrupt a team that was just starting to look settled.
