Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.
The three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.
Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and another man who escaped after the explosion was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene showed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.
The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the interior minister stated.
Those injured by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a firefighter.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the explosion had taken place on a story above the doorway and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told Italian media, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
