Monte Cook along with Monte Cook Are Instructing Classes at Dungeon Master University

Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been running immersive events where experienced game masters lead fantasy roleplaying games in ancient fortresses in England and at an American castle venue. These all-inclusive trips are especially popular among long-time dungeon masters who rarely get the opportunity to join in the game themselves, and they often look for guidance from experts on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the planners began designing a structured way to tackle these topics, which led to the founding of DMU. The debut workshop is set for early January 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“You can watch numerous digital guides on any topic and learn quite a lot, but the idea was that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction together with fellow DMs, where real-time interaction with faculty instructors and your peers often in comparable situations and aim to level up their game,” noted the dean of Dungeon Master University.

Available Classes and Cost Levels

Game masters can choose from tiers ranging from just under $1,000 to $2.5K, depending on the level of access they desire with the experts. The base tier includes selection from four classes:

  • Skill Building: Focuses on the basics of leading a game.
  • Story Arc Development: Is dedicated to building persistent adventures.
  • Worldbuilding: Emphasizes the development of worlds.
  • Professional Development: Tailored to dungeon masters who seek to understand more about the gaming industry.

All workshops includes two days of classwork spread over two days.

“The workshops are structured so that you depart having usable skills, probably greater confidence, and many practical techniques,” Carl explained. “These aren't simple talks and they’re not just static videos. These classes that you can attend, absorb insights from, and then head back to your table the next week and apply in your local game.”

Expert Instructors

The majority of workshops are instructed by duo of instructors. Universe creation is taught by Monte Cook and Keith Baker, together instructing the craft of setting creation.

Professional development presents multiple instructors, such as a puzzle design specialist, an entertainment professional, and a pioneering DM. The expanded teaching staff is designed to provide specialized information to participants with particular aims.

“Various attendees want to launch their own live gameplay show and share their stories with the world, several aim to release and write original content,” Carl said. “Some just want to ask, How do I get to be a DM at a program like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Higher Tiers

A $1,500 premium package includes access to a opening gathering, a introductory package, and a brief one-on-one appointment with one of the faculty. This marks the inaugural DMU session, though the team has previously run Castle Days during breaks between campaigns at their immersive experiences.

“It would be possible to organize an complete event just on consultation sessions for expert DMs,” Carl said. “I don’t know if that’s the best use of each attendee's hours – I think the structured learning and the lab work is highly beneficial – but I believe it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”

The $2.5K premium option offers an 60-minute private session and the possibility to run a game for several participants plus a teacher, who will then provide notes and coaching.

“The aim is for the faculty member to review any element is concerned with: Hey I don’t do well with spontaneous decisions or I feel stuck in this kind of combat situation. Can I run a situation for you and get feedback on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl said. “Or maybe they want to obtain critique and advice on a particular setting that they’ve been creating.”

Future Plans

Responses from the inaugural session will help determine upcoming academy workshops. Carl suggested that possible changes could include increasing consultation time, making it longer to three days, or testing different seminar structures.

“I hope that we conduct these frequently,” Carl stated. “I truly hope to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in various locations, and in multiple countries. The feedback has been really terrific. We're quite pleased with the results so far and I believe it would be amazing to be able to organize these in partnership with major events.”
