An adolescent lioness saved from conflict-ridden Ukraine has received critical dental surgery to remove a severely infected canine tooth caused by an infection.
The lioness was brought to The Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden, Kent on March 14 after a campaign by director Cam Whitnall, who raised £500,000 to fund her and several other lions from Ukraine.

The procedure was performed on Friday by dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has cared for hundreds of large felines.
"When I examined the lioness's oral cavity, I could see immediately the broken tooth was severely infected," said the dentist.
He believed the infection was caused by a trauma sustained more than a year ago, causing germs creating toxins within the fang.
"My philosophy is non-human dental problems need to be treated in the most predictable, the least invasive and most secure manner," he said.
The expert explained that as Lira no longer required to catch prey, extraction was the most "logical and humane option."

The rescue center said the extracted tooth was 3.14 inches in length, with the dentist having to extract a pocket of pus from beneath the tooth and close the significant opening with seven dissolving sutures.
He also performed a dental procedure on the opposing upper canine tooth, which was discovered to have a similar issue.
Briony Smith, curator at the facility, said the procedure was a "complete success."
She noted the team had observed "a minor swelling on the lioness's face" but it had been impossible to assess "the extent of the problem."
"Lira will be somewhat sore to initially, but now that the infectious materials are out of her body, she will begin improving over the coming days," added the curator.
This vital operation marks a significant step in the lioness's healing process after her arrival from the conflict area.
