For Bellingham to aims to earn his place back into the English top squad, the smart move to cut out the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted when he saw that the substitute board was about to come up following a night of inconsistency in the match against Albania was not good enough.
"I’d rather not overstate it but I stand by my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the players who come in," stated Tuchel. "Decisions are made and you have to accept it as a player."
The midfielder must understand. There was no call for an outburst. Kane had recently scored to make the Three Lions two goals ahead in an inconsequential qualifier, there were six minutes left and he, after a below-par performance, received a caution for a foul on Armando Broja. This could scarcely be called a controversial substitution. Actually it might have been reckless for the head coach to leave Bellingham on given that there was a risk the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the World Cup by picking up a second yellow card.
Yet Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. No one could overlook the player's frustration when he clocked that his replacement was ready for a teammate. He flung his arms in the air and while he exchanged a handshake on his way to the touchline there was no doubt that the manager did not appreciate it.
Here lies the test facing Bellingham. He applauded his teammate for sending in the ball for Kane to head in his second of the night, but his other actions was self-defeating. It's not like complaining was going to reverse the substitution. Tuchel has talked so much about respecting team hierarchies and the value of behaving correctly.
Bellingham, left out of the team last month, is being watched carefully after returning to the fold in the current camp. In effect he has been on trial and he has not done himself any favours with his response to being taken off as England rounded off a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a feisty challenge from the Albanian team.
As a result the jury is out on how England operate most effectively with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was open to interpretation. There was experimentation by the coach in the beginning. Under him, England have gained England a clear system lately, using a holding player, a box-to-box player, a No 10 and out-and-out wingers, but there was a different feel versus Albania. Jarell Quansah was made his England debut, Adam Wharton made his first start internationally and the role of Stones as an auxiliary midfielder created a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate in the latter period but frequently appeared trying too hard. There were a lot of poorly executed passes. An unnecessary confrontation against an opponent early on. The team looked disjointed after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents came after he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card was shown after an opponent took the ball by Broja and committed a foul on Broja.
Finally England’s depth proved crucial. Tuchel threw on the Manchester City player, who appeared more naturally fitted to the position in which Bellingham operated during the first half, and Saka. In time Saka delivered a corner kick for Kane to open the scoring. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will play a key role next summer.
However, all talk was about Bellingham. The quality of Rashford’s assist for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked amid the drama of the substitution incident. After the final whistle, all eyes were on him. The coach approached behind him and pushed Bellingham towards the English fans. Their connection is not broken. The coach isn't ready to discard Bellingham yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to offer him a starring role is still uncertain.
