The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from around eight feet to seal the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off victory over Fleetwood.
The champion entered the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, coming up one shot behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
