Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's victory against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure with the London club.
The 44-year-old delivered a rather mysterious comment in his post-match media briefing even after earning a 2-0 win at home thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points propelled Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, perhaps improving the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to consecutive matches.
Yet, when questioned about the full-back's assist and general display, Maresca unexpectedly disclosed his displeasure over the previous two days within the organization.
"The way the squad want to improve has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I commend them - because with numerous problems, they are doing very well after a tricky week," he commented.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because several people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City manager elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When questioned if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I love the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent fitness and suspension problems, noting they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.
"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our best player but we play almost all season minus our best player.
"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to acknowledge because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's win over Everton strengthened their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled next week.
It was not immediately clear what exactly prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his time as Chelsea manager.
In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at the training ground, attended a pre-match press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and secured a win over an high-flying Everton team.
It was unclear whether any specific press stories had irked him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter involving the club's fans, a section of which have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester in July last year.
